Time to start travelling some more! Couple of impulse dicisions.. haha. Last time in NL, 2 weeks ago, was nice again. This time not as hectic as the first time but still got to see most people. Good deal :)
Last weekend one of my colleagues was staying the weekend so we went for dinner on Friday night. Started discussing what to do in the weekend: let's do a road trip to Chicago! It's only 3.5 hours drive from Ann Arbor. So Saturday I picked him up from his hotel (I have the better rental car currently haha, Lincoln MKZ) and we headed west on the I-94. Getting more & more to the west side of Michigan, you see a lot of Dutch names. Places like Holland, Watervliet.. still so funny!
As we were driving around Lake Michigan to Chicago I can now say I've been in 2 more states :) Indiana & Illinois. I have the toll way receipts to proof it haha. I forgot all about the time zone changes, so I didn't realize we had an hour extra! Which made us arrive in downtown Chicago at 3PM local time. Very hot & humid (87 F, 30 celsius) and it was raining at the time we parked. Luckily it was only a short shower so we had a sunny and warm afternoon pretty much. After getting a map from a hotel we headed towards Michigan Avenue, the major avenue with all of the super expensive brands. Fun to see :-) Grabbed some lunch at a Potbelly and then started heading towards Millennium park. That way we saw all of Michigan Avenue and all of the beautiful buildings. I was quite surprised to see the nice architecture of the high rises here. Lots of beautiful buildings!
At Millennium park we went to see Cloud Gate, so surreal. Walked through the little garden to head to the big fountain. Unfortunately the next day there was going to be a thriathlon so we couldn't get to the fountain itself. But it was still nice to see. Then headed to the lake to sit down and relax a bit, enjoy the breeze (finally, Windy City!) and take off our shoes. Poor feet ;-)
When we finally got back up we decided to go to the Skydeck in Willis Tower, to enjoy the view over Chicago from the 103rd floor! It was still sunny while going up, but up there we saw the clouds coming in. And by the time we nearly went around all sides of the skydeck, the thunderstorm hit! We were just in line for the glass balconies to take pictures. Kinda cool to see the lightening while you're up so high in a building! And this way we luckily missed the heavy rain ;-)
When we were finally done watching around 7.30 I convinced Ganesh to take a taxi to the restaurant as it would have been another 40 minute walk... We went to Lou Malnati's, supposedly the best place in town to get the local dish: Deep Dish Pizza. I must say, it was yummy! I don't really understand why it would be better than a regular pizza, but it was nice. And Ganesh was happy being able to watch soccer ;-) We had to sit at the bar as there was more than an hour wait for a table. No problem! Such a nice place and good to relax after such an intense day.
Walking back to the car was nice, seeing the streets full of people enjoying a late dinner outside or heading to a club. I'd love to come back to this city, loved it!
The drive back was tough, but it's nice & quiet on the road. I finally got back home at 3AM. Sunday was just a lazy day, trying to get back into normal rithm. And also recovering from all the walking from Saturday ;-)
Then last Monday I was talking to some people about the long weekend that's coming up. 4th of July is a day off here in the US. Originally I wanted to go back to Toronto, drive up there with a colleague. But he had other plans. As I didn't want to just stay home a long weekend I started thinking: where to go on my own for a long weekend... and I came up with: Vancouver!! I've missed Van so much since I left early last year. It will be 1.5 years exactly since I left. So tomorrow afternoon I'm flying via Seatlle to Vancouver to have 3 full days there!!! Yay. Flying back Monday via Toronto.
So excited! And eh.. for more travelling.. End of this month I'm going to Curaçao & Aruba for a week! Visiting Isan, go diving, beach, relaxing, partying, enjoying the island life :-)
I say: not bad.. not bad at all!
That's it for now. More stories later :-)

Leuk dat je weer naar Vancouver gaat! Hopelijk lukt het ook met mijn buitenlandopdracht! Ik heb in ieder geval al een lead! :)
